Think of all of the times you go to a restaurant. And that’s just you out of all the people in the US. In our project, we are focusing on specifically Los Angeles restaurant food waste. In that one meal you ate, you wasted about half a pound of food. Each day, a restaurant fills an entire bin with about 30 pounds of vegetable and meat scraps. And think about that time they got your order wrong and they sent it back to the kitchen. That meal you could have eaten probably went straight to the trash. 84.3% of the food is sent to the landfill, 14.3% is recycled, and only 1.4% is donated. 85% of what isn’t eaten or used is thrown out. Food waste that goes to the landfills ends up produces about 34% of the methane gas released. For this reason, this is a big problem with our environment.
